African Diaspora In Brazil

African Culture In Brazil Today

Slavery brought a lot to Brazil, slaves from Africa brought different cultures and traditions. they brought different foods such as acaraje a dish made from peeled beans formed into a ball and then deep-fried in dendê. It is found in West African (Ewbank), they also brought different dances such as capoeira which is a dance mixed with marshal arts, (Ewbank). these traditions are still celebrated today and we can thank slaves for that since they brought it. slaves basically built Brazil from a social and cultural perspective.

How Slavery Was Like In Brazil

For the first time, slavery was based on race, this event is a demonstration of social classes. The Transatlantic slave trade was based on race it also was the biggest slave trade at the time with millions of slaves being transported from Africa to Brazil, (Conard). owners in Brazil were one of the worst slave owners out there, they raped, assaulted and treated slaves poorly which makes them brutal, (Conard). If owners didn't treat slaves poorly maybe slavery would have ended earlier and it wouldn't have been such a horrible event in history.

How Slaves Fought Back!

Slaves revolted all the time in small and big ways. At times owners had nothing to say. One way a slave got their freedom is by simply running away, (Waite). That is extremely risky because if they got caught they could get badly beaten or worse killed. They would organize certain groups to help each other fight back, dances like capoeira helped slaves learn marshal arts, (Waite). Since slaves kept helping each other they were able to revolt against their owners and at times earn freedom.
